I See Color.
In celebration of Black History Month and as a mixed race black woman, adding the racial background of Tara in the book was no accident. My reason for starting her life as a slave has given me a way to write how someone from the worst conditions finds purpose and even saves the world. Of course, coming from horrible conditions is not a black thing, but we as black people have gone through unimaginable struggles in history. As black people, we still manage to not only survive, but thrive. Even though I do not mention the races of my other characters, I do see color in all while writing them. The images i’m creating on ChatGPT are based on people of different backgrounds and cultures. There is no way around that. So, can you really trust that my book resonates with all of humanity and their struggles, or am I creating a race book wrapped in Science Fiction?
Let’s think about it this way. Aren’t we all capable of being resilient? Aren’t we all capable of thriving in the worst conditions?
The answer is clear for Tara and all humans on this planet. Tara is an immortal woman who was born a slave, lost her entire family, gained new ones, lost them again, gained them back, and loses them for centuries. Tara knows loneliness, pain, happiness, peace, survival, and loss. Can we say the same for someone who is Black, White, Hispanic, Latino, Asian, Indigenous, etc?
Once again, Tara is immortal and she has the same struggles as any human on Earth. So, why do we try to erase the humanity of an entire race when they struggle? Or worse, why do we ignore or reduce their struggles? What we all understand is that if we ignore and try to erase their struggles we get to not recognize their humanity. Writing this book, I wanted people to see humanity from someone who is indestructible and black. Writing this in Science Fiction Genre gives me the opportunity to articulate this purpose.
My ultimate purpose is for readers to see color and their humanity, through science fiction. In the world we live in, it is vital that we start seeing both in each other if we are going co exist peacefully.
