Tara’s Death
Tara’s first death revealed an unexpected secret.
Tara’s death is never permanent.
Tara is immortal.
When Tara visits Harlem, New York City, she meets her chosen immortal family. She is taught that hiding ensures their safety as well as her own. To continue existing as immortal beings on Earth.
So, why the public deaths? Why risk exposure of her immortality?
The intentions behind Tara’s second and third deaths are human.
Her desire is to be remembered.
Tara can never live a full, immortal life, but she can exist as a human for a limited time. She wants every life to matter because she can never be recognized as her true, full self. She understands that her death will be remembered throughout history, to ensure that each life leaves a lasting mark.
Each life becomes the signature of her existence.
To risk her family and her own existence to be seen is a selfish act. But also very human.
Take the second death in 1939, for example. After being drugged by Sheila, Tara wakes up in a desert, where she is forced to spend her future hiding. Tara’s disappearance might have caused a stir in Harlem, but eventually, people would forget the singer in the Spades Jazz Club. Creating her death by a drug overdose keeps Tara’s life and legacy alive in the public.
Her need to be legendary grows throughout time, especially after her third death.
Tara has no intention of dying quietly. She loved her life as an actress, with Jason and Evan. Her desire to be remembered outweighs her desire to go into hiding again.
Leaving her family and life is the last thing Tara wants. But she is immortal; her existence is larger than a single lifetime. Tara understands this; she accepts and resents this truth.
If you could, how would you choose to die? How do you want to be remembered after you are gone? Let’s discuss.
